National Olympic Committee of Sri Lanka

Objectives

The main objective of this project is to suggest the proper way to communicate sports information through telecasting infographics. Most Sri Lankan broadcasters take some templates from the website and do the telecasting infographics. It doesn’t enhance the Sri Lankan identity. Because it is made by some other person in a different country. I studied on-screen graphic theories in sports broadcasting in the Sri Lankan context throughout my dissertation. The event's main objective is to give educational and cultural knowledge about the host country. so I tried to give cultural knowledge about Sri Lanka through telecasting infographics.

Conceptual approach

Concept

Hambantota city is made by sea, culture, and land. That culture is established because traders come to Hambantota by using silk rough. The reason for the silk rough is wind direction. So that is why I became my concept as wind waves.

Wind Waves

In fluid dynamics, wind waves, or wind-generated waves, are surface waves that occur on the free surface of oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, and canals or even on small puddles and ponds. They result from the wind blowing over an area of fluid surface. Waves in the oceans can travel thousands of miles before reaching land. Wind waves range in size from small ripples to waves over 100ft (30m) high.

Waves Characteristics

  • The crest is the high point of a wave

  • The trough is the low point of a wave

  • Wave length is the horizontal distance between the crest or between the troughs of two waves

  • Wave height is the vertical distance between crest and trough

  • Half the distance of the wave’s height is called the amplitude of a wave.

Wave height depends on three factors. Wind speed, wind duration, and fetch (expanse of water wind blows across)

Color theme

Hambantota is made by sea, land, and culture. So my color theme is blue, orange, and green. Blue represents the sea of Hambantota, orange represents the land and green represents the culture. At that period Muslim people came to Hambantota as a trader. To represent that incident I used green color.

Logo developments

Logo design is an important area of graphic design and one of the most difficult to perfect. For my project, I have to design a logo before I start to do telecasting infographics. The Asian youth games logo is one unique branding element that reflects the host country and theme by using simple and clear graphics. A logo design proposal for the Asian youth games 2017, Hambantota would be a high-profile portfolio work for every designer in the industry.

Final logo

The logo concept goes with “wind waves”. Five wind waves come and create the athlete and he is caring bright sun and trying to uplift it. Those five wind waves represent the most famous five sports in the Asian youth games such as basketball, cricket, soccer, athletics, and rugger. Also, the strong wind waves represent strong high waves providing the logo with challenges and representing the athletes competing in the Asian Games. Those waves connect like holding their hand together symbolizing that Asians are living in harmony like a family and enjoy the great pleasure brought by the Asian youth games and they join together and uplift the Asian youth games. The logo has the light and deep blue represent the sea, the light green and the deep green represent the culture and orange represents the land. Those are the elements that the host city has made. The shining sun comes from the emblem of the Olympic Council of Asia and represents the ever–glimmering and warm spirit of the Asian people and the Olympic Council of Asia’s vital role in Asia’s sports development and cohesion.

The
shining sun also symbolizes the passion, charm, and unity of Asia’s people. In Sri Lanka culture the lotus symbolizes the purity of the body-mind and speech. In sports, athletes need those things for motivation. The typeface selection empathies with the pride of all athletes competing in Hambantota and it shows the spirit of the athletes.

Pictograms design

Pictograms development

Pictograms for the Asian youth games were inspired by the wind waves. The athlete's bodies and sports equipment were built from the characters or part of them in a continuous stroke. The shapes are characteristic of the Hambantota District shape. This shapes according to the athletes’ different movements.

These are the introduction card for using introducing the game or the event. All the games in 2017 Asian youth games have this introduction card like this. The logo typeface is “HandelGotDBol”. Here I used the same type of face for the main heading, and the subheadings are goes with “Tw Cen MT” typeface.

I used green color for highlighting the qualified results. Because of green is suggest stability and endurance. So someone getting qualified means he/she will be stable to stay in the match. I used orange to highlight some scores as a world record. Orange represents energy success encouragement and happiness. And also the orange is symbolic of strength and endurance.
