Overview

I’m a senior marketing officer at WSO2 during the week and a dedicated artist on weekends. DZiel by Ru is my brainchild where I showcase my detail-oriented designs.

I express my life through my art. I love detail; the more complex it is, the better. Pen and ink are my mediums. The details of my pen and ink drawings enhance each subject’s idiosyncracies. In fact, you can easily identify my work by the intricate details and linework I use to create each piece.

Every DZiel by Ru print is drawn, painted, and shipped by me.

My Marvel inspiration

I’m a huge Marvel fan. Back in 2018, I created a series of designs to showcase at Lanka Comic Con. Usually, I need two or three weeks to finish one piece of art. It’s a process that requires a lot of patience on my part and a good movie always helps!

My starting point is a pencil sketch of the Marvel character, followed by pen ink. Some drawings use color pencils if required. I use only 3 colors for these types of drawings - red, blue, and black. I used gel pens for this project (nowadays I use Rotring pens too). Many people couldn't believe that these drawings used gel pens because the pen strokes are so smooth that they looked like printed material in the end.

I sold most of the art pieces that I created for Lanka Comic Con. Most importantly, my work was highly appreciated by the conference attendees and I enjoyed getting to know fellow Marvel enthusiasts.

Commissions

I get many requests to create personalized pen and ink drawings. DZiel by Ru is a brand that focuses on the tiny details. Whether you need a special drawing to remember your beloved pet or a drawing based on your favorite fictional character, I have a responsibility to showcase all the details for your drawing.

Reflections

Art is meditation. Most of the time, I draw during the weekends. In a way, it’s a stress-release activity. At times, I feel that impatience is my biggest problem - like any artist, I really want to see the end product but I know that patience is essential. I know that with patience, I can create a masterpiece. And if any drawing doesn’t meet my expectations, then I know it’s time to change my direction and use a new approach.

I’m very reluctant to draw something twice. As a person, I’m always on the lookout for something new and experimenting with my art.
